Amidst the cold, you were there. Through waters deep and dark, you illuminated my path, letting through the currents, only enough that we would bend and not break. Amidst the heights, you were there. Your words, robust and reliable unlike the earth beneath us. Should this soil crumble from below our feet, would there be a fall at all? Would this fall be worthy of mention? Are we passing across dimensions then? Is it possible to stand at the gates? When would we go beyond the point of no return and how would we know it? I was weary to speak, for I did not recognise the terrain this war was being undertaken in. For now, we were fine. Amidst fears of overwhelming enemy forces advancing, we had stayed put, perhaps waiting for these mercenaries to tear apart what little good was left. Our candle wicks grew shorter, the flame smaller, yet it began shining brightly and arduously amidst the dark. Why not give it the right to set things on fire? Will that not help illuminate greater crowds? What would we burn? and whose would they be? It was as though that moment for questions had passed. Numbness drew close, her eyes dimming away, the life being drained out of her, only now she knew it and we knew it. She smiles and before she wipes away that month old smile, they separate her from herself.
